Dear Melissa,
Letter From the Editor:
WHAT YOU NOTICE MATTERS! And, I hope you noticed that the title of my ezine has changed, and there's some color changes as well. I suppose it was inevitable that I should decide to finally use my favorite phrase as the title for this publication. Life is a process and I'm very much a work in progress. I hope you are, too!
Every since I defined my conscious living philosophy some six years ago, people have been telling me stories about how their intentional awareness has opened their eyes to all the visual gifts around them, inspired many "Aha" moments, and provided clarity and direction in their lives. Often someone will say: "It was all because 'what you notice matters!'"
I've interviewed a corporate coach with a fascinating model for integrating our feminine and masculine energies. Oh it's good stuff. And, I'm sharing a recent personal victory that reminded me of some key life lessons I wanted to share.
I hope you find joy and inspiration in the many glorious gifts of October!
I'd love to hear from you. Let me know what you're noticing! Let me know what challenges you face as you stay aware of your particular life path. Send all your comments, ideas and questions to me at: wadscomm@msn.com or visit me online at www.melissawadsworth.com
| Meet Sara Yao: Working with Power Expert |
 |
Sara Yao and her Working with Power partner, Michelle Christensen, are aware of something extremely fascinating.
It is this: We all have access to 12 elements of power: 6 masculine forms and 6 feminine forms. Yet, most of us are underusing some of our powers and distorting others. One thing is certain, accessing all 12 in an integrated manner will certainly help us reach our goals feeling more fulfilled, connected and inspired.
Sara is an organizational management and communications expert. Through the Working with Power day-long programs, she coaches female leaders at mid-sized to large companies on how to reach goals, handle pressure and stress, work with difficult people, and leverage life outside of work. Sound impossible?
From Stress to Success
At 35, with two small children, and a growing business, she knows what it feels like to be stressed out. She even admits to past mini- meltdowns of her own. As she says, "I got to the point where I knew I wanted more, but I was already working as hard as I could. So there had to be a way to make it be and feel easier!"
That's when Sara and Michelle hit upon the Elements of Power model.
The 12 elements of power are:
- Receptivity/Driving
- Connection/Self-Reliance
- Nurturing/Providing
- Sensuality/Pragmatism
- Resilience/Fierceness
- Holism/Focus
Integration Trumps Balance
Women often longingly talk about trying to achieve balance. But achieving integration, not balance, is the key.
"Balance is a math problem. To create balance you have stop doing something in one area to have time to do more in another area. Integration is fluidly accessing both the feminine and masculine sides of your powers to make life easier. Sometimes you use more of one and at other times the other side," Sara explains.
We run into problems and stress out when we distort one of these powers or underuse certain powers.
Distortions of our powers can result in our being gossipy, flakey, too emotional, not getting things done. For instance women tend to get burned out when they overuse the masculine "driving" power, without integrating the flip side which is "receptivity," the power of allowing or asking for help.
According to Sara, when we underuse our feminine powers our energy level is not sustainable. We need to fill our energy tank with feminine powers in order to effectively use our masculine powers.
As a corporate coach, Sara might take a woman through the following process to help her integrate her "driving/receptivity" powers.
· Visualize a goal that needs to be reached. Imagine how it feels to reach that goal. · Ask for help and support (from the Universe, co-workers, etc.). · Take the first concrete step that moves you toward that goal.
"This helps a woman start toward a goal at an ideal state of inspired action. When a woman leader changes the ways she interacts and leads, the working culture changes, too. We all become and feel more successful when we effectively use our gifts and our passions," says Sara.

| The Lessons in 60 Miles |
 |
|
Last month I walked 60 miles for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer three-day event here in Seattle. That's a lot of steps...one after the other, after the other!!! Plenty of time to stay aware about what this experience was teaching me, that I could apply to my business and personal endeavors. Here are a few lessons:
- When you're trying to accomplhish something really BIG, breaks are essential. A 5 to 10 minute break to stretch, to rest your mind (or you feet), refreshes you for the next leg of your journey. If you try to power through without breaks, you will break down or lose steam before you reach your goal.
- Successfully meeting a major challenge is usually a part solitary, part group- supported effort. There will always be parts of our adventures that will feel or actually be solitary. In the end, it's our mindset that moves us ahead. Solitary time is great for being contemplative and aware, to learn what works and what doesn't, to judge how to best proceed. Solitary time should be balanced with group support time -- whether that's a team of assistants helping with the work load, a mastermind group providing ideas or people nourishing you and cheering you along. It's nearly impossible to succeed without the help of other kind and like- minded souls.
- Every now and again, it's important to challenge yourself in new and BIGGER ways. Try something that sounds impossible. Train for it. Take it in steps. And, set your "I can do it" attitude. You will only accomplish what you set out to accomplish. Big accomplishment rarely happen by accident and you just never know what feats of magic you still have left in you.
I hope you all accomplish fantastic and amazing things!
One of the key things I did to get through my 60 miles is keep in mind a picture I had put on my dream board of a pair of "fresh as a daisy" feet. Not only did that image give me a psychological lift, it reminded me that I could have that result if I took care of my feet. The purpose of meditation is to awaken in us the skylike nature of mind, and to introduce us to that which we really are, our unchanging pure awareness that underlies the whole of life and death...that we so long ago lost sight of amid the busyness and distraction of our minds.
