An interview with Do Not Go Quietly author Sedena C. Cappannelli

Midlife and beyond is new territory for myself and many of you reading this. Not just because it is a different life phase from the career- and family-building years of the 20s, 30s and even 40s. It is new territory because this is not your parent’s “retirement.” We are inventing anew what it means to keep contributing to society. We are showing generations to come that as you age you continue to grow and to reinvent yourself. For those of us pioneering new paths and still working on big dreams, we’re here to show that we are by no means finished with making a significant difference in the world!

According to author, organizational and wellness consultant, speaker and elder activist, Sedena Cappannelli who, along with her husband George, are launching their newest book Do Not Go Quietly: Real Solutions and Empowering Strategies for People Who Weren’t Born Yesterday, people 40 to 65 plus are ideally poised to harvest their experience and leave a legacy of real value.

This is just the book for multiple generations of “mature” people who want to celebrate their age as they live more consciously — sharing the remarkable wisdom their life has engendered. For people under 40 it’s a great preview of the contributions that are possible when one stays open to living and aligning with their purpose.

How to keep following your dreams at any age

Sedena began her adult life as a model and then achieved her dream of being an actor, she reports, “I am where I am today because I allowed myself to follow the dreams of that little girl swinging on a tree in Lubbock, Texas.”

By following that initial dream spark of becoming an actress, Sedena believes she laid the groundwork for the passion she finds on her current path as a change agent and co-founder of AgeNation. She says that combining youthful passions with a mature perspective and using earlier skills, actually allow you to “grow young” even as you age.

This path came out of a “perfect storm of transition” around the time she turned 50. Her mother had recently passed, she had moved into a new home with her new husband, she was officially in menopause, and experiencing the loss of the first half of her life.

Living consciously

This perfect storm and the longing to feel better about her life led Sedena to energy tools that opened her up to doing something more expansive than acting. She began doing organizational training work with George. Then she began co-authoring books. First, Say Yes to Change, then Authenticity,” and now Do Not Go Quietly. She is walking her talk about using the third act of life to live her purpose and together they are energetically living their message: that the best is yet to come.

“This has been a circuitous route. I never dreamed of being an author, of speaking, and facilitating organizational programs and my own wellness workshops. Withouthaving fulfilledthe dream of my acting career it wouldn’t have happened; I wouldn’t have had the confidence or the skills. We need to re-envision our best selves in the world. Remember those things you were good at when you were younger, those things you loved to do and follow your heart. That’s the way to resurrect your dreams.”

It’s this distillation of one’s life that can lead to new roles and choices. Do Not Go Quietly offers strategies, tools and inspiring messages for the 100 million Americans fifty plus about how to live more consciously for greater life satisfaction and success.

Be an elder not an older

“As we age we can choose to be an elder instead of an “older,” she says with a laugh, quoting the mythologist, Michael Mead. “Our culture focuses on youth and disregards aging. At Age Nation we’re creating change. This is an exciting and vital time of life, a time of rebirth. New perspective gives life to new strategy. Life is unity, not a series of unrelated segments. It’s a cohesive flow. No one season is more important than another.”

Sedena herself reframed this transitional time of life. “I reframed being an actress. I thought it was about my face, my personality. I discovered it’s so much more than that. I can take my gifts, share them, and make this a magical time of life.” She would like everyone to empower themselves through the sharing of their gifts.

Creating legacies of wisdom and contribution

Sedena points out that baby boomers are elders who have witnessed a huge array of advances culturally, politically, and scientifically that would have astounded earlier generations. She states, “I believe we have a responsibility now to contribute to humanity. We need to create legacies of wisdom that we can share with younger people. We need to lift ourselves and others up to be the best we can be – at any age.”

As Sedena and George write, “Do Not Go Quietly is for those of us who understand that a life of genuine quality and accomplishment is only possible when we constantly challenge the boundaries of our beliefs and habits and take some real and perhaps long overdue risks. For we agree with Helen Keller who once said – “that life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”

Sedena remarks that the great mystic poet, Rumi said let the beauty of what you love be what you do. “I believe, and George believes, we can do this by reconnecting to our dreams. We can re-look at them and stir up these dreams and find our purpose. I stirred up my purpose and found that it is to encourage and assist others to embrace their highest potential.”

Sedena continued, “I follow my heart and try to look at everything I do through the lens of my purpose. It’s the way that will lead us to increased inner security and to create a redefinition of time and space, self and relationship to others. Although our bodies are aging, research shows that during the later years there is a developmental possibility for the mind and spirit to grow and expand.”

Revving up your soul

Do Not Go Quietly gives readers a way to revalue their lives. “We all have the answer and need to go into hearts and practice gratitude to know what next step to take. Being mature used to be a bad thing. It wasn’t cool. But actually it’s not such a bad thing to be emotionally, psychologically, and mentally mature! Fifty, sixty or seventy can be enlivened and fun, sexy and juicy. As soon as we allow that energy in, we experience our lives from a new and empowered perspective…and everything is perspective anyway. ” says Sedena.

Sedena believes that in midlife and beyond our souls are just “revving up.” She paraphrases Marianne Williamson by saying, “in the autumn of my life I may not have as many leaves, but I have a whole lot more colors.”

Anyone looking for the advantages of aging will find plenty in this book. Sedena points out that when we’re younger we’re moving too fast to feel into our lives. Now going slower we can feel into the present and new opportunities. “We can feel into a new stage of evolution I call ‘beyond aging.’ We can enliven ourselves. This book includes lots of ways to do this.”

The power of action

Inevitably our conversation turns to financial matters. I mention that the great financial security many baby boomers created has changed. This is both creating anger and instability in people’s lives. Sedena believes that financially we have to be proactive because our world is being taken away from us. “Government and business are not honoring the older generation in any way. They are in fact taking away our rights. We have to vote for what we want. We have to contribute in a way that really works. Go to a meeting where our voice can be heard. Write our politicians, sign petitions. Reconnect with old friends. Be proactive. Be political. Our AgeNation.com website empowers people to see possibilities and to get involved in their lives in a positive, proactive, engaging and enlivening way.”

Revisiting your core values

I mention that an issue I witness is that older people can fail to re-examine their life values and that can keep them stuck in old thinking and behaving. Sedena agrees and replies, “As Ram Dass says, we can reimagine the process of getting older if we perceive ourselves as more than our minds and bodies, if we connect with our souls. Things are changing. It’s not easy for a lot of people. Yet, a whole new world opens up when you look at life in a different way. We are not the same people we were in our younger years. Our values are different now and it’s important to reevaluate those values. They will inform your actions and bring power back into your life. We include several chapters on values. The exercises and practices will guide you to discover your ‘timely’ values.”

This isn’t our parents’ midlife and beyond as Do Not Go Quietly points up. If we hold onto memories of what we were and how we looked, we will miss what is happening now. Sedena puts it perfectly when she says, “Be in the present moment in your heart and in gratitude. Beauty is in presence. You’re alive right now. It’s a gift that we’re aging. Really live it. It’s never too late to live your dreams.”

This word has come up for me as I speak with clients and I think about my own life as I move forward into this new spring time opportunity of personal and professional growth.

Like never before, discernment is the tool that you can use to make the best choices that are clear, meaningful and in your true interest! This serves not only you, but everyone who’s life you touch.

Here is what I know about discernment as a key to a successful life:

1. Discernment enables you to be at ONE with your Authentic Self.
When you are mindful of who you are, what your gifts are and what you are being inspired to express in the world and share with others, you are better able to be ALIVE as your best authentic self.

It’s only when we get sloppy with our words, our thoughts and our intentions that we fall into old patterns of belief and action that don’t fit our true brilliance any longer. That’s when we beat up on SELF rather than build Self up.

Discernment requires attention — a pause before you speak, more consideration of what is true for you right now before you choose a specific action or plan. Practice using discernment before you commit your energies throughout the day (while leaving room for spontaneity, of course). This ensures you are always sending love, light and levity out into the world.

2. Discernment allows you to identify and align with your “Truth.”
Truth is not universal. My reality may not be a good reflection of your reality. We all view our lives through the lens of our personal perspective. Truth comes in “yours,” “theirs” and “mine” varieties. So don’t get caught up in someone else’s truth. Discern what your truth is (based on your values and soul learning path) and guide your actions accordingly. Appreciate that your truth may not be a good fit for others at their current place of evolution. We all learn at our own pace (and if you believe in reincarnation…in your many lifetimes).

The Lance Armstrong mess is a great example of this. I know people that greatly admired him and disliked the constant rumors of doping that plagued him over many years. Rather than self-identifying, they were “Lance-identifying.” That may feel good as long as things are going great. When things fall apart though, you are left adrift without a clear sense of what it was you were “attached” to. We each make our own reality, there’s no need to get caught up in or defend the reality that someone else has created for themselves. Appreciate what they bring to the world and what their life lesson may be to work through. No need to judge it either. When we view all events and outcomes through the lens of learning, we can discern the lesson or lessons that are being experienced.

3. Discernment provides your BEST next steps.

As a life coach I want my clients to feel that they have discerned the actions that will serve them and their lives best. This is taking your destiny one step at a time. So as you move ahead into 2013 remind yourself that the old ways are done. It’s possible to evolve nearly every area of your life in exciting and freeing ways. Choose an area for renewal, revision, refreshing.

Discern an area of your life that could benefit from the release of old energy. For me, that was the clearing my old financial records. Truth be told I was attached energetically to my old persona as the successful PR professional who made big bucks. By going through the old “evidence” of my success and releasing my attachment to it, I release all those old comparisons (based on old societal conditioning). I am now free to create a visionary picture of unlimited success in alignment with my current soul path and idea of service to the world.

Here’s a discernment clue: when you’re inspired, excited, or feeling a physical “resonance” like fluttering in your stomach, chills running up your spine and arms or a sudden feeling of lightness, you are moving in the right direction. At first, you may not receive physical confirmation with every choice or even every day, but the more you listen to your physical feedback system, the more discerning you will naturally become.

We are ONE in brilliant being. Let your true self SHINE!

Two new movies present the extreme positive and negative sides of human nature. Looper, the sci-fi action flick, presents sterotypical comic strip views of human nature, while Argo, the history-based political thriller, takes a more mature approach to the best and worst of human nature. Ironically it is the movie based on the past that presents the best of human nature, while the future looks downright backwards in Looper.

Doing the right thing

Argo presents the story of the 1979 take over of the American embassy in Iran after the downfall of the Shah. Six state department employees make it out a back door and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassor. In this movie the implausable becomes possible due to the remarkable courageous efforts of several people, including the Iranian maid who risks her own safety and ability to stay in her home land in order to protect the Americans.

There are characters who act from lower instincts of protecting face (here nationalistic face) and covering one’s bureacratic butt. These “just the way it is” characters feel anachronistic and weak compared compared to the future-looking characters who put doing the right thing above country and even family. I don’t suspect that I possess this kind of bravery, as much as I would like to think that I might be able to step up under these kinds of circumstances. So when I see it in others, I’m uplifted about the potential inherent in humans.

Here men as well as women show themselves able to step up, to be their bravest selves even when their ego minds are telling them they can’t, that it’s just too dangerous. Everyone loves to cheer for a hero and there are plenty in Argo to cheer for. You even want to hug the comic relief heros of the Hollywood establishment who see the fun in playing with the false “reality” of tinsel town for good and worthy ends.

Doing the bad seed thing

Then there is Looper. In this bleak future time travel is only used for evil, telekinsis is no more than a parlor trick, and humans are in such survival mode that the worst of what they can do to each other takes center stage. Everything about this so-called furturistic movie is old, trite, used-up and tired. I suppose all the shooting is designed to distract you so that you don’t notice this. Provide enough stimuli overload and the audience won’t care that the characters are unsympathic and robotic? Hmmm.

Why do men like these kinds of portrayls?

The males in this movie are selfish, self-absorbed, power-hungry, surface. Usually I love Bruce Willis action characters, but when his character starts killing children to preserve his idea of the “better” life (life with his wife), I know I’ve fallen into a very dark version of reality with little redeemable qualities. The only father type figure is the head gangster who rules his “household” with a hammer, literally. All other male figures are relieved of any need to engage in fatherly responsibilities. How children turn out is of little consequence to them.

Women as Mother or Whore

In tried and true Hollywood fashion the women are whores or mothers or, in this case, both. The future of humanity (and apparently imaginative good story telling) is based on whether they are nurturing good mothers or mothers who would sell their souls (or their children in this case). Ugh!

I suppose women are could feel good about the depiction of women as the stronger, more courageous and grounded characters of this movie. Emily Blunt does do a great job as the hero in this movie who uses love and understanding as her weapon of choice.

The futue deserves more imagination than a video game

So much cleverness went into the plotline, yet there is little real imagination to be embraced here. This vision of the future is constrained by old twentith century gangster-style antics. Taking drugs by drops into the the eye is barely a step into the future, let alone a leap.

Looper is a great example that if you use the past to predict or play in the future, you remain very limited.

So be Argo-like and do what scares you for the right reasons, and let your vision of integrity leap you to the best possible outcome!

Have you ever wondered about what happens after death, or more accurately, when you pass from human consciousness to spirit consciousness?

I have many times throughout my life. In fact, being a personal growth life-long student and a life coach I’ve dedicated my life to sorting out my beliefs around issues like the purpose and meaning of life, what can be done to live with fewer limits and more personal brilliance and joy … and what this all might leads to in the end.

If you have been on a similar life path, it perhaps comes as no surprise that physical death is not the end of consciousness. According to medium and author Jeffrey Marks, death is not even the end of our individual consciousness.

What are you dying to know?

In his new book The Afterlife Interviews, Volume I, Marks reports on the interviews he conducted with more than a dozen spirits asking them the kinds of questions you might ask if you had such direct communication with the spirit world.

In this first volume he covers the first 23 questions about the afterlife and what happens when we die. He asked questions about the death experience itself, the first thing the experienced, who met them on the other side, details about the life review process, what was gained and what aspects of self were lost, how they communicate, whether they got instant wisdom, and how they define evil.

Marks believes that The Afterlife Interviews can be a source of solace and hope for those on a path toward the afterlife — that would be all of us folks. He especially hopes that it provides comfort to those who are currently facing illness and imminent passing, as well as to their loved ones who may be able to release them with less anxiety and fear. That possibility alone is reason to read this fascinating book.

Ten Remarkable Reveals about the Afterlife

The Afterlife Interviews are full of informative and fun possibilities to consider. Here a few of the highlights.

Your Life Review is about praising your life rather than judging it. Yes, you will have a life review yet apparently we leave judgment behind when we die and wake up with a refreshed consciousness or perspective, and we are supported with love and compassion throughout. (I recommend watching the Albert Brooks movie Defending Your Life as a funny way of seeing what this process would be like with judgment). I’m working on leaving judgment behind now in my life, which my ego mind is fighting, so it’s a relief to know that weighty thinking will dissolve in the ether. As one spirit communicates, “It is the pageantry of your life, to honor it and feel joy for what you’ve contributed and what you’ve done.”

You’ll finally loosen up! If you’ve lived most of your life feeling tense, this should be good news. Much of that has to do with realizing the errors of earth-bound perceptions. One spirit reports that he got to keep his identity and got to rid himself “of a whole bunch of other stuff that never needed to be there in the first place.” Marks writes about it this way, “the answers tallied up to be something that not only opened up on’es mind, but also brought encouragement and hope for the future — a sense of self-nurturing each had lacked while alive on earth.”

Your new body will be made of light. I often say to clients: you are light and your life is a vehicle for that light. Apparently once we pass over the light that we are at our essence gets freed up, not only from heavy thoughts, but from things like gravity. “It’s like I’m Superman,” one spirit reports. This spirit energy body vibrates very fast. Marks is also given the information that “for both bodies — whether on earth or the Other Side — it’s the mind and the way you think which effects both.” So practice healthy thoughts in this life!

Life is your own individual projection. The spirits repeatedly emphasized the individual nature of one’s life path, the individual nature of one’s life lessons and the truth we’re each responsible for our own life movie. One spirit says it like this: “everything that you experience out there in life, starts from within you, it goes out, and then it comes back in for your perception….You’re responsible for this. You’ve got your own life, it’s your projection.”

You have all the time in the world. Because we don’t die, but rather live on in an another form of consciousness the stresses we humans feel in regards to time go away. “On earth, you guys really beat yourself up about your inner challenges — like, ‘this is going to kill me if I don’t figure this out.’ But then you realize you cannot die, so you approach inner challenges from a mouch more loving and caring perspective…you just know in your heart that you will make it.” This reminds me of the wonderful line from the movie “The Best Exotic Hotel Marigold,” that goes something like: Everything will be alright in the end. If it’s not alright, then it must not be the end. That’s an invitation to see ourselves as enough, and what we do each day as fully enough.

“Personal evolution apparently doesn’t end when we shed our mortal bodies,” according to Marks. The desire to continue to be better, greater, “more full,” remains a part of one’s spirit drive but without the kind of stress we experience on earth. This is a great earth life practice: Intend to expand your potential without stressing out. You will evolve. It’s inevitable so light up in the expression of and expansion of your brilliance.

You can meet “the other “Yous” that have existed (and will exist) throughout history. This may be the hardest concept to wrap your brain around. Once your in a “no-time” environment all this is exists at the same time. Marks said that he was most surprised by this insight, and the fact that some spirits communicated with their other simultaneous selves like old friends, while other spirits avoided contact due to the emotional baggage attached or the desire to not to “go back.” One spirit describes these reincarnational selves as “prisms of the Oversoul in the linear environment.” My recommendation from this insight? Start befriending the person, the soul, you see in the mirror each day. That sets a positive “self regard” practice into motion. The effects of this will certainly serve you well now, and who knows how it may positively effect those other “Yous.”

You choose which spirits to unite with. As one spirit puts it, “based on certain lessons and pools of energies, some will stay together and hang around together, while others may go off in different directions.” Another communicates to Marks, “There’s always an acknowledgement of the relationship between people…but you don’t have to like everybody.” As I see it, we can reduce our stress by accepting that we aren’t aligned, in the same way, with all people and that this is OK. This enables us to release the relationships that don’t serve us from a place of intention and choice rather than feeling like victims to our relationships and falling into heavy emotions that dim our light.

There is indeed a sense of love between everything. Part of this comes from an awareness of the interconnected nature of everything that is, part of this stems from a sense of wanting to be of service to others on their journey. This is the reason we make contracts with others to be in their lives. This reinforces an idea that a friend brought to my awareness. She told the story of how she realized that she had “contracted” with her ex-husband to help him learn about greed, so she knows she wasn’t a victim to his cheating, that she agreed to it! Taking a wider view of challenging situations can open us to empowered “spirit” possibilities that our narrow ego minds find difficult to grasp. As one spirit communicated, “We all coose the family; we all choose the dynamic of the life we live.”

You’re already complete! In the “no-time” zone of the afterlife you’ll wrap your awareness around the idea that all your earthly lives are already completed. You can either see this a good reason to do nothing or a good reason to do whatever you feel passionate about doing because your perfection is assured! Simply put by one spirit, “You judge and compare based on economic lifestyle on earth, and that’s no basis for determining a spiritual level or the growth of an entity.” This spirit addionally conveys about trying not to speed through life toward some imagined better end, “It’s all so ‘wow’ that you wouldn’t just want to all of a sudden ‘go to the end.’ There’s so much awesomeness to life.”

My take away from The Afterlife Interviews is this: Life is full whether you are in physical form or spirit form. Live your life with joy and less worry. Appreciate the lessons that come your way and realize that you never die, you only expand more into your potential as a light being.

I’m sure that each person who reads this book, will experience that the information pertinent to their own growth and evolution will stand out. It’s a book full of wisdom that can serve us in living our lives fully engaged right now.
Good girls aren’t supposed to call a vagina, a vagina?

That’s what is making news these days. It’s 2012 and Republican men in politics still have a 1912 perspective of feminine decorum. And they are trying to use this so-called “decorum” to put, and keep, women behind the scenes where they can be seen (and “represented”) but not heard.

The latest evidence of this is the “vaginagate” that took place at the Michigan House of Representatives. Michigan House Democrat Lisa Brown was banned from speaking on any topic for using a proper anatomical word that was deemed too vulgar for mixed company. It’s OK to legislate it, don’t just say it.

Apparently good girls and nice women don’t mention vasectomy either. The retribution? Sit in the corner and be quiet like a good girl.

Back in 1988 when the Dirty Dancing character played by Patrick Swayze stated the oft quoted line, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” I remember the audience laughing. At the time I assumed it was at the silliness of the “Baby” name and ihow old-fashioned the whole situation felt — so out of step with modern times. Everyone recognized how ridiculous it was to make the good girl who was trying to do all the right things sit down and behave according to 1950 rules. After all, the audience knew that she was the one who was going to make the biggest difference in the world.

There’s nothing to laugh at when this happens in 2012 within our so-called modern political system. When the few women who are doing the right thing and representing women get silenced, the only appropriate reaction is a wave of outraged voices – male and female alike.

Shaming Women into Silence

Let’s be clear, what is being silenced here is dissent.

Women who dare to speak up against the old-boy practice of discussing women’s rights without being invited into the conversation, are being publicly shamed — at least that’s the intention. Strong women with opinions are being dismissed as having had a tantrum.

I really wish this were a movie and we could all nervously laugh and get on with our lives — free to speak up and stand out.

You would think that after the whole “slut” debacle Republican men would be clued in to what direction the wind of public opinion was blowing. Apparently they thought that the whole Sandra Fluke issue was a Washington D.C. problem and had nothing to do with how they ran things in their own state.

Are women noticing this?

How long will it take the community of women to notice that their are those who are focused on silencing them and making them appear silly? How long will women let negative legislation get enacted that erodes their rights, without even saying a word?

Even strong women role models like Oprah don’t utter the word vagina. It becomes a va-jay-jay — something to giggle at and not take seriously. Little did we realize, I’m sure Oprah didn’t, that we needed her to be a role model for saying the word vagina, to make it an acceptable part of conversation. Maybe she can still do this.

20th Century Good Girl Definition
In the meantime I’m proposing that we start redefining what a nice girl and a good woman is.

Old definition and reward system:

Be a good girl and you’ll be allowed to do the same work as men for less pay.

Be a good girl and you can become a super shopper.

Be a good girl and go eat your ice cream.

Be a good girl and we’ll allow your presence, but not your voice, in the boardroom and in politics.

Be a good girl and you will get the man of your dreams.

Be a good girl and be seen but not heard.

Be a good girl and make your man look good.

Be a good girl and accept whatever perks come your way. You aren’t in control of what these are. Sorry.

21st Century Good Woman Definition

I’m lucky to be surrounded by and connected to amazing women, doing amazing work and having a significant, positive impact in the world.

Likewise, each of us can override our good girl conditioning and choose to make a bigger difference. We can choose to be our full powerful self and take on leadership roles. We can step out of our comfort zone and begin projects for good that seem impossible. We can connect to supportive men and women around us who get our vision and applaud us for it.

Good women are passionate. They invite men and women to support their visions and their hopes for a better world.

Good women refuse to sit down and be quiet. They are here to change the status quo!

Good women don’t need to be validated by men or other women. Their actions and intentions are based on contributing to their families, the well-being of the planet, and to the well-being and equal treatment of all humanity. This is self-validating.

Good women recognize what is out of balance in their own bodies, educational systems, political bodies, and bodies of water. They wake up hoping to take small steps that create significant shifts.

Good woman have stopped caring what others think and are noticing what they are truly capable of accomplishing.

Good women take responsibility for experiencing their own self-worth. And when they have doubts, they take responsibility for knowing the perfect people, strategies and techniques that will help them to shift back into their light.

Good women are a force. They believe that collaboration is better than competition.

Good women instill confidence into girls by modeling how to speak up and how to stand out.

What would you add to the old definition that we need to throw out?

What would you add to the new definition?

Who are the female role models you listen to?

Please contribute your thoughts and share them. We need to create some beautiful noise!
