Love Is The New Currency

If we have learned anything from these tumultuous times, it’s that the currency of competition and greed is as unstable as a building constructed on a foundation of sand. During any rocky times, the foundation cannot hold and collapse is certain.
On the other hand, the currency of love is strong and endures through any circumstance. It cannot be diminished or ravaged. The currency of love only grows more expansive the more it is unchained from the bonds of fear.
I’m not talking just of romantic love. I am thinking of the deep sea of love from which everything is created. This love is at our essence, our core. We seldom get to this deep love because fear chains our heart in uncertainty. Our fear of surrender keeps us separated from our true radiance. Yet, nothing could be more sure than this love currency.
Some of my favorite movies have this theme at their heart. The easiest way for us to comprehend the beauty of this love currency is through romantic and familial love. Local Hero, features a wealthy manager from a rich Texas oil company who finds that the currency of hard, cold cash doesn’t go very far in a small Scottish village. Rich in scenery and quirky relationships that work beautifully, the movie turns the notion of “quaint” on its head, while embracing the truth that love (love of the sea, love of community, love of family, love of music, love of a good scotch, etc.) are daily riches that are easily accessible to anyone. When one already appreciates and accesses this kind of wealth, cash may have allure but it doesn’t stack up in the long run.
Another favorite movie is Love Actually. The opening and ending montages show people reunited in airports. This poignantly captures a moment when many of let our guard down and accept the love that is being offered in the moment. A moment when someone is waiting for us with open arms.
Big love
But what of other times when romantic love or familial love is not the prize? On any given day do you love life? Do you feel certain of the love currency from which you can create a life that is full and rich and satisfying? There’s a moment in the movie Michael, when Michael the “earthy” Archangel, played by John Travolta, looks out upon a bucolic field at sunrise and muses how much he is going to miss everything on earth. That’s pure love of that “which is.” When we love what is in any moment, we love in alignment with our core essence. When we love the expansiveness of what can be created through love of vision and imagination, we are in alignment with our love currency (just like Michael loved the biggest ball of yarn and the biggest frying pan).
Yet, when your retirement fund still struggles to recapture its losses, when your house value has declined and you worry about attracting clients or customers, where is the love you might ask?
Faithful love
Yet, this is exactly the time to tap into your infinite love currency. This manifests as an intention not to let fear bind your heart. Love currency manifests in your faith that you are supported by the Universe, you are connected to source, and there is enough for everyone. I’ve had many clients and friends tell me during this challenging time that what they needed always showed up just when they really needed it. They didn’t know how it was going to happen, but it did.
The current generosity extended to the people of Haiti is a wonderful example of cash being empowered by our love currency. Through generosity and compassion you help to manifest well-being in Haiti. That’s a pretty remarkable thing. Through your open-hearts you manifest a new reality in that country. By accessing your love currency, you turn the tide of energy in a chaotic situation to one of increased order. The order, of course, is being directed by love rather than fear.
Tips for breaking into you love currency
This is just the tip of the love currency iceberg. Here’s a few tips for letting your heart break open so that your heart can expand to its full potential on a daily basis.
- Keep your eyes open for signs of love. The more you practice seeing the love, the more you feel love to be your natural state. In this state you lack for nothing.
- Find your riches in relationships. The more you tap into your relationship resources the more you reinforce your belief in divine support. You’ll meet the right people at the perfect time. Your relationship riches help make you stronger in the face of any circumstance, while giving your more confidence in yourself, even when you’re alone.
- When you’re most troubled, extend help to others. When you take the focus off your lack and put it on your infinite wealth, you step back into your love essence.
- Practice holding your true worth. By setting the intention to appreciate your love currency (your ability to manifest from the powerful energy of love), then no matter who you’re dealing with, you feel in alignment with your authentic worth. You’ll also begin to more clearly see the inherent weakness of power that comes from old cultural paradigms and definitions of “worth.” That’s a crumbling empire.
- When you feel fear, switch to a feeling of love. This could be love for your family, love of your good health, love of your inherent talents, love for your spouse, love of your pet, love of laughing, love of a sunny day, love of the smell of jasmine, love of a good meal. Fear is a blocking agent, unless you’re in imminent danger of course. From fear your options narrow and close down; from love your options open up wide!
- Find the lovable aspect of a challenging situation. This is the ultimate in perspective shifting. For instance, I recently felt competitive with someone who I felt was copying my business language. Within an hour I was able to go from very frustrated to empowered as I realized that this situation was just the push I needed to expand my business to a larger, different audience. So you see, it’s just the thing to take you from breakdown to breakthrough in the shortest amount of time. Who doesn’t want to shorten their suffering time?
Remember, you can access your love currency any time you want. It will make you richer immediately. Try creating a dream board that reflects your personal love currency.

I love this post, Melissa. These are indeed times for us to be reminded of what is most important: LOVE. As you stated in your last point, loving the challenges make them so much more enjoyable and less scary. Thanks for all you do!
