Reviewing The Dark Knight

On Friday afternoon my husband and I took off early to catch the 3pm showing of “Mama Mia!” Alas, since it was being show in the smallest of theaters, it was sold out. So we let ourselves get sucked into the big theater feature “The Dark Night.”
Now, I imagine that these two films are about as different as different gets. Light verses dark. Singing and happy verses pained psychosis. Once again I let myself be influenced by the “it got good reviews” rationale. And, while “The Dark Night” was well acted for the most part, it affirmed something very important for me: Given a choice, I’d rather not expose myself, my conscious mind to darkness.
What’s the point? Some people might say darkness makes us glad for that which is light. Yet, I believe that if one lives aware of all the lessons available, life offers each of us a natural balance of light and dark, happiness and sadness, confusion and enlightenment. You can’t avoid it so why choose darkness if you don’t have to?
I left “The Dark Knight” theater feeling empty — strangely unmoved by the plight of the characters who felt paper thin. The darkness held no substance or meaning.
I’m on a path of seeking to attract more lightness and satisfaction. So the next time my first “happy” choice of the moment gets derailed, my intention is to pay attention to my intuition and to remind myself of what I already know. I just prefer the sunny side of the street.
