Tips for Trusting Yourself as You Process Your Personal Growth

Go with your soul-growth urges

It happens to each of us at different times in our lives. A specific life event may spawn it. An undeniable readiness to experience life at a deeper level may compel you. Whatever the cause, there are times when you will feel urged to reach out and try something new. To expand your understanding of yourself, your connection to spirit and/or your presence in the world.

That urge may manifest as the desire to take a new life path direction in your career. It may manifest with you embracing a new self-development process or life coaching. It may show up as the need to move forward in personal growth or to do some emotional clearing. The intention to approach your life or the world differently may even facilitate new awareness or greater intuition.

Personal growth equals mental, emotional and spiritual evolution

If such a compelling desire takes a hold of you and you act on it…Congratulate yourself! Personal growth is personal evolution. And your personal growth has real practical applications to living the life of your dreams. It’s necessary.

Yet, some people work very hard to squelch their soul messages and needs. Walking an unknown path can be scary to those who haven’t intentionally gone down a path of self-discovery before. And, even for people who read self-help books, go to workshops and search out personal-growth mentors, sometimes “the work” that seems to be involved or the answers that arise can bring up doubts, worry and resistance — especially if the mental mind is having trouble trusting the new inclinations.

Here are a few tips for trusting yourself as you process your personal growth:
  • Go at your own pace. This is your life, your heart, your soul. How long it takes to cross the threshold from learning to accepting and on to action is up to you. Sometimes this takes a day, sometimes a week or a month or more. Ask your intuition for progress reports. Intuitive dream boards can show you how your are moving through a growth cycle.
  • Be gentle with yourself as you push into uncomfortable places. Don’t back away from intense feelings, yet don’t hang on to them either. Try to experience the natural arc of your emotions without undue attachment to them. They will pass as you stay focused on your intention to progress.
  • Pay attention to the signs and support you get from the Universe. Feeling anxious or stuck often results from being too inward. Literally looking outward for support can help you find just the right book, the right meditation, or the perfect person to talk with. I was speaking to a friend yesterday about wanting validation from a particular source, even though I knew it wasn’t their job to validate me. I got home and in my email in-box is a meditation on giving approval to yourself That was such a smile.
  • Find a personal growth tool that keeps you moving forward. It’s not unusual for us to second guess ourselves when we take control of our mental and emotional processing. Our autopilot — the ego mind — happily tells us things like: “Oh this is harder than I thought it would be,” “I’m not ready for this yet,” “I just don’t see what good this is really going to do.” Even as your ego ming may want to avoid doing “more” while you give yourself “time” to process new information try to stay engaged. Journal write. Create new dream boards. Meditate. Repeat affirmations. Regularly visual your desired outcome. Learn new breathing or energy grounding exercises.
  • Celebrate again when you’ve worked through a current life challenge, an old doubt, worry, fear or a big hot button. The more often you work through your personal growth opportunities, the more you will understand that this is just a natural cycle, and the quicker you’ll process through each new cycle.
Practice grabbing the personal growth baton

My current intuition teacher says that personal growth phases are like being in a relay race. If you’re practiced at personal growth processing you easily grab the baton that is passed to you from a workshop leader, mentor, or coach. If this is the first time you’ve taken the baton you may stop dead in your tracks because it’s a shock to your system.

I encourage you to take the soul-lighted path that moves you from your head into your emotional processor so you come into alignment with your soul. Anytime you take on personal growth you are recognizing your power to manifest the results you desire.

    Mary Alice Long, PhD Says:

    Melissa,
Thank you for your reflections on entering the unknown. I have dipped into the deep waters over and over, circling round and spiraling back on myself to find myself, yes, in the unknown.
Play is my reality whether I am participating in serious endeavors or acting the fool in improvisational storytelling or dance. Play is my way of learning and processing in the moment. Play does not mean without risk! Play is life and is the key to contentment, to a full life. I know first hand the struggles that a single Mom goes through and the fears she faces…I know first hand what it means to give away to much and then finding regret in a pile with the torn wrapping paper; I know first hand what it means to sit in a social services office and ask for food stamps; I know first hand what it means to make a move in a certain direction because it just is the right move; I know first hand what it means to step out on the stage to dance solo in response to horrific events in the world. All of my first hand experiences are play to me. Play is serious, play is kind, play is grace, play is silly, play is abandoning and abandonment of some parts of the Self and claiming of others. Play is part of the process in which we claim ourselves and relationships in our community, in the greater community. Step onto the earth and you can feel it…play takes practice for many adults in our culture in these times. As Melissa says, don’t be afraid to take the baton and play with a dream board, dance and sing your song, you won’t regret noticing and believing in your own next steps!

The openness of doing the board that I wanted appealed to me. I paid attention to Melissa’s advice about ‘What You Notice Matters!’ and loved what my dream board showed me about my future. You are a fabulous human being. Thank you Melissa!”
